While in Jerusalem, during his last days, while having supper with his friends, Jesus foreshadowed his death, saying, “I’ll be with you only a little while longer”. Understandably, Peter turns to him and says, “Where are you going? Can I come with you?” These friends have travelled the Judean countryside together, they have crossed the Sea of Galilee, journeyed in Samaria. They have followed their teacher into the temple courts, the hillsides of Galilee, the garden outside the city, as well as into private homes of both honourable and disreputable people.
Tell me, when you hear this teaching, do you hear a story of inclusion or exclusion? When I hear Jesus say: “I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture.” All I can think about is the people who don’t enter through the gate. What about the other sheep? What about those who are left behind?
